Biography
Merhej has illustrated more than thirty-five children books in Arabic, authored several graphic novels, and is part of the founding team of the comic book collective, Samandal. Lena Merhej has taught illustration and animation at American universities in Beirut. After studying graphic design at the American University in Beirut, she completed her thesis in design and technology at Parsons School of Design in NY in 2002, and her doctorate in Visual Studies on "The narration of war in Lebanese comics" in 2015, defended at Jacobs University, in Germany.
War is a recurring theme in his artistic creation. It is the subject of her first comic book, "I think that we will be calmer in the next war" (2006), the best-selling book in Lebanon in 2007. Her animated film Drawing War won the Jury Prize at the New York Film Festival and has been featured in various local and international events.
