Irudika announces Varya Yakovleva and Rocío Álvarez as the artists selected for the 2026 Residencies
The international professional illustration event Irudika has announced Varya Yakovleva in the illustration category and Rocío Álvarez in the graphic animation category as the artists selected for its 2026 residencies. The artists will be able to work on their artistic projects during a residency organised between 3 March and 22 May at art venues in Angoulême (France), Zapopan (Mexico) and Bilbao, culminating in an exhibition in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

The ninth edition of Irudika, the International Professional Illustration Fair in the Basque Country organised by Euskal Irudigileak, will take place from 23 to 25 October at the Artium Museum in Vitoria-Gasteiz and will feature artists, publishers and agents travelling to the capital of Álava from all corners of the globe. Agents and artists will take part in the various round-table discussions, workshops, meetings and professional meetings which, as usual, are organised around three themes: Illustration, Publishing and Parallel Sectors. We said goodbye to Mexico this week and ventured on a long journey to Bilbao. It's hard to believe we've already arrived at our third phase of the residency. The jet lag wants to slow us down, but the city's energy keeps us moving.

We are not gonna lie, we are quite sad to leave behind the sun, the colors and the flavors of Mexico but also excited to see what this last phase in Bilbao has to offer. Pancho the fortune bird said our future is a bit dark and he can't properly see it, we'll have to come back and ask him again.

Zapopan was alive this week with Semana Santa traditions and festivities. Our time in Mexico is running out, but luckily we still have time to work up the courage to try some "tacos de ojo" (cow eye tacos) and "chapulines" (roasted grasshoppers).
